The City-State has launched a $50 travel credit for 2025, to help her residents bear rising costs of public transport. It seeks to support lower-income households in compensating for part of their commuting daily cost.
This credit can either be used to top up fare cards or it can be used to buy concession passes for a discount; basically, it is a travel allowance so that the whole populace can afford and access public transport.
Who Can Apply
It will be given to households whose gross monthly income per person amounts to about $1,600 to $1,800 or less. Other than these, families residing in public rental flats or those who receive government assistance are also likely to qualify.
At least one member in the household must be a Singaporean citizen or permanent resident. Among those who qualify, some will be notified automatically, but some others are required to manually apply for the travel credit.
When and How to Apply
Application for the 2025 travel credit is expected to open early in the year with the announcement of fare adjustments. The stated eligible household will be receiving their notification letter by post at their registered address.
In case no letter is received, interested residents may choose to still apply through the government portal or, in person, at Community Centres and Clubs. Applicants are required to log in with Singpass and fill in the current details of their household members and income before submitting the form. Once approved, usually within a few weeks, applicants will receive confirmation by mail or SMS.
How to Redeem the Credit
Upon approval, the $50 travel credit can be redeemed in cash-values at TransitLink Ticket Offices or top-up machines, or through the SimplyGo app. Travel credit holders would have to bring the notification letter and some form of identification for redemption. That amount is strictly for public transport fares and cannot be withdrawn as cash.
Don’t Miss Out
The whole exercise is set to benefit thousands of households across Singapore. To ensure one does not miss out on this, one should watch out for the notification and make sure to have collected all relevant documentation and applied immediately when the application windows open. The travel credit is one of the smallest yet most impactful means to ease the financial burden of commuting come 2025 for those who really need it.
